Long Weekend with Responsibility and Results
NGO EU Harmony welcomes the initiative to amend the Labour Law by introducing one long weekend per month, whereby the last Friday of each month would become a non-working day. We believe that improving the work-life balance is an important step towards a more modern and higher-quality society, as it contributes to greater employee satisfaction and motivation. At the same time, this right must be accompanied by clear criteria for accountability and performance, in order to prevent any decline in productivity or deterioration in the quality of services provided to citizens and businesses. Therefore, we propose that the implementation of this measure be linked to the achievement of work objectives and measurable results, particularly in the public sector. European practice shows that more flexible working models deliver the best results when they are based on performance. In Iceland and the United Kingdom, pilot projects involving reduced working hours have demonstrated that productivity can remain stable or even improve with good work organization. We call on the competent institutions and social partners to engage in dialogue and find a sustainable solution that balances employees' rights with the efficiency of the system and the needs of the economy. NGO EU Harmony remains committed to solutions that improve the quality of life of citizens while preserving accountability, productivity, and European labour standards.
